How to safely clean bedroom AC mold without spreading spores?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the bedroom has been dripping a bit and now there's black speckled mold growing on the corner of the wall behind the curtain. I've been waking up with a stuffy head and a dry cough that goes away after I leave for work. What's the safest and most effective way to clean this myself without making the spores go everywhere and risk my family's health?

The black speckles are likely Stachybotrys or Aspergillus, common in Dubai due to high humidity and AC condensation. Your symptoms are a strong indicator of a mold exposure issue.

For a small patch, wear an N95 mask and safety glasses. Isolate the area by closing the bedroom door and placing a wet towel at the base. Lightly mist the mold with a 50/50 white vinegar and water solution to weigh down the spores before wiping with a damp cloth. Do not scrub dry, as this aerosolizes particles.

However, surface cleaning is a temporary fix if the AC drip pan or internal coil is the source. The moisture problem must be resolved first. In Dubai's climate, this internal contamination will recur unless the entire system is addressed.

Given your symptoms and the recurring moisture, a professional inspection is strongly advised to identify the extent of the contamination within the AC unit itself. DIY cleaning of visible wall mold doesn't solve the root cause, and disturbing it without proper containment can worsen indoor air quality.
