Is black mold causing our heath symtoms?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an exterior wall. My husband has had a persistent, nagging cough for the last month that won't go away with any medication, and I've been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches. Is it possible this mold is the cause of his cough and my symptoms, and what's the first step we should take?

It is very possible the mold is contributing to your symptoms. The persistent cough and morning congestion you describe are common reactions to prolonged mold exposure, particularly in a bedroom where you spend many hours. Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold growth on exterior walls, where condensation often forms.

The first step is to address the moisture source. Since it's on an exterior wall, it's likely due to a thermal bridge (where cool indoor air meets the warm outside wall, causing condensation) or a minor leak. Wipe the visible mold with a diluted bleach solution, but this is only a surface fix; the mold will return if the dampness isn't resolved.

For a cough that has persisted for a month, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use a moisture meter to find the exact dampness source within the wall and an air quality test to identify the spore types and concentration. This is crucial for health concerns, as it moves from suspicion to evidence-based action.

Until assessed, improve ventilation in the room. Run an exhaust fan, open windows when outdoor humidity is lower (typically early morning or evening), and ensure your AC unit is set to a temperature that minimizes extreme differences with the outside, which reduces condensation. Do not attempt to remove large patches yourself, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen the problem.
