How to prevent mold in my Deira bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has developed these black speckles on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. I first spotted it about a month ago, and even after wiping everything down, it’s slowly coming back. I’m in an older building in Deira and I’m worried the humidity is just getting trapped in there. What’s the most effective way to stop this moisture buildup and prevent the mold from returning for good?

Black speckles reappearing on leather goods in a Deira closet is a classic sign of a humidity issue, common in older buildings here. The outside wall is likely cooler due to AC, causing condensation when warm, humid air enters. This trapped moisture creates the perfect environment for mold.

First, address the moisture source. Increase air circulation by keeping the closet doors open as much as possible and using a small battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside. Ensure your room's AC is running effectively and that its vents aren't blocked; it's your primary tool for removing humidity. Check the closet's exterior wall for any cracks or gaps in the sealant that might be letting in humid air from outside, which is a frequent issue in older construction.

For the current mold, a solution of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) is effective for cleaning non-porous surfaces and less damaging to leather than bleach. However, the mold will return if the humidity problem isn't solved.

If the growth persists despite these efforts, the issue may be more serious. Hidden condensation within the wall itself or a chronic leak is possible. In such cases, a professional inspection with thermal imaging can identify the exact source of the moisture intrusion and the extent of any hidden mold growth, which is necessary for a permanent solution.
