How urgently remove black mold for kids' health?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled out the wardrobe in our master bedroom to look behind it and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading on the wall, probably from a slow AC leak we never noticed. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed this. How urgently do we need to get this professionally cleaned for our health?

Address this immediately. With children experiencing persistent respiratory symptoms and visible growth, this requires professional assessment within days, not weeks. The combination of Dubai's high humidity and year-round AC use creates ideal conditions for mold, particularly from undetected leaks like yours.

Black mold is an umbrella term for several species; some only cause allergic reactions while others can produce mycotoxins. Without lab analysis, you cannot determine which type you have or its specific health risks. However, any significant mold growth releasing spores into your home's air can irritate airways, explaining the chronic coughing.

For a situation of this scale behind a wardrobe, do not attempt DIY cleaning. Disturbing it will aerosolize a high concentration of spores. Professional remediation is necessary to safely contain the area, remove the contaminated materials (like drywall or insulation), and HEPA-vacuum the environment. They will also identify and fix the moisture source—in your case, the AC leak—to prevent rapid regrowth.

Request a company that provides before-and-after air quality testing documentation from an independent lab to verify the spore count has been returned to safe levels. This evidence is crucial for your peace of mind regarding your children's health. Until it's handled, keep the children out of that room and ensure good ventilation in the home.
