Can we clean black mold ourselves or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoe boxes. It wasn't there during my last deep clean a few months ago, but with the humidity lately, it's gotten worse. My husband thinks we can just wipe it down with bleach, but I'm worried about it spreading or making us sick. Is this something we can safely handle ourselves, or should we call a professional cleaning company?

Small patches of black mold (under 1 square meter) can often be handled safely by residents if the underlying moisture issue is fixed. However, your specific situation has several factors that warrant caution.

The location behind boxes suggests poor air circulation and a persistent humidity source, which is common in Dubai's climate. Simply wiping the visible growth with bleach is not recommended; it can agitate spores, making them airborne, and the chlorine may not penetrate porous materials to kill the root structure. More importantly, bleach does not address the moisture problem allowing it to return.

For a small patch, use a dedicated mold cleaner or a solution of white vinegar and water. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Discard any porous items like cardboard boxes that are contaminated. After cleaning, use a dehumidifier or increase AC airflow to that closet to keep humidity below 60%, which is critical here to prevent rapid regrowth.

Given this appeared suddenly and is in a bedroom, I would recommend a professional assessment. The mold grew for a reason—likely elevated humidity from condensation or a minor, unnoticed leak in the wall. A certified inspector can use a moisture meter to find the exact source and an air quality test to check if spores have spread into your living space, which is a common pathway in air-conditioned homes. This diagnostic step is what separates a temporary fix from a permanent solution.
