How to remove mold from interior walls in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it's gotten much worse. What's the best way to deal with mold on interior walls here in Dubai, and should I call maintenance or try to handle it myself first?

The black spots spreading on your wall are a classic Dubai issue, often caused by thermal bridging. The outside wall gets intensely hot, while your air-conditioned bedroom is cool, creating condensation inside the wall cavity. This trapped moisture, combined with our high humidity, is an ideal environment for mold.
For a small patch (less than one square meter), you can attempt to handle it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Move the wardrobe to allow the area to dry completely. Scrub the area with a mixture of white vinegar and water or a dedicated mold remover. However, simply cleaning the surface is often a temporary fix if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved. The mold roots (hyphae) can remain deep within the plasterboard. Given that the mold is behind furniture and has been spreading for some time, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. The wall cavity may have significant, hidden growth. In many Dubai buildings, this is a structural condensation issue that building maintenance should address, as it may require improving external wall insulation or sealing. We frequently identify that the visible mold is just a small part of the problem. A proper inspection involves moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the condensation source. If the wall is saturated, the affected drywall often needs to be cut out and replaced. For a definitive answer on the mold type and the best remediation strategy, a lab test from a surface or air sample can provide a targeted solution. |
