Black mold causing our cough in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the weather got more humid, and I’m starting to panic. I’ve just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Jumeirah. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this after the recent rains. Could this be toxic black mold and is it the reason my family is getting sick?

It very well could be mold contributing to the cough, especially with the recent humidity. The black spots behind the wardrobe are a major red flag; that area has poor air circulation and traps moisture, creating a perfect breeding ground. While not all black mold is the infamous "toxic" Stachybotrys, any mold can produce irritants and allergens that cause respiratory symptoms like persistent coughing, particularly in children.

Dubai's climate, especially after rains when humidity spikes, causes condensation within walls and behind furniture. Year-round AC use can also contribute if units aren't properly maintained, as they can spread spores throughout the house.

Do not attempt to clean it yourself. Disturbing it without proper containment will release a massive amount of spores into your home's air. The first step is a professional inspection. They will assess the moisture source and the extent of the growth, which is often far greater than what's visible. A lab test of a sample is the only way to accurately identify the species, which informs the remediation strategy.

For your family's health, I would prioritize this inspection. Look for a provider that uses a moisture meter, thermal imaging, and, crucially, can provide documented before-and-after lab results to verify the air quality has been restored. This is a common and serious issue in villas here, and proper remediation is key to stopping the symptoms.
