How to permanently remove mold from a closet after storm?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Al Barsha has started getting a fuzzy black mold on leather bags and shoes stored inside. We had the big storm a couple of months ago and I’m worried the moisture got into the walls. What’s the best way to treat this and stop it from coming back for good?

The fuzzy black mold on your leather items is a clear sign of persistent moisture, likely from the storm's water intrusion into the exterior wall. In Dubai's climate, trapped moisture from such an event can fuel mold growth for months.

First, address the items. For leather goods, wipe them down with a dilute vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 4 parts water) or a dedicated leather cleaner, then allow them to dry completely away from the affected area. Do not return them until the source is fixed.

The critical step is not just cleaning the visible mold but finding and stopping the moisture source. Given this is an exterior wall, the storm likely compromised the waterproofing or insulation, and the moisture is now trapped inside the wall cavity. Simply wiping the closet surface will not provide a permanent solution.

You need a professional inspection to assess the wall's moisture content with a moisture meter. This identifies the exact extent of the water damage hidden behind the drywall. The permanent fix will involve opening the affected wall section, removing any wet insulation, thoroughly drying the cavity with industrial equipment, and treating the structure with antimicrobial solutions before sealing it back up with new, mold-resistant materials.

To prevent recurrence, ensure the room's AC is running consistently to control humidity and consider using a standalone dehumidifier or a desiccant like silica gel packs inside the closet to maintain a dry microenvironment. For a villa in Al Barsha with suspected storm-related water intrusion, a professional assessment is strongly recommended to prevent structural damage and ensure the mold is eradicated at its source.
