Is bathroom mold urgent or can I DIY?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I just noticed black spots starting to form in the corners of the ceiling after my showers. With the humidity rising again, I'm worried it's spreading quickly behind the walls. How urgent is it that I get a professional to handle this, or can I tackle it myself with bleach this weekend?

Black spots forming after showers indicate active mold growth, which is urgent to address in Dubai's climate. The high humidity and condensation from air conditioning create ideal conditions for it to spread behind walls and ceiling panels, where DIY methods cannot reach.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a dedicated mold cleaner or a diluted vinegar solution—bleach only removes the surface stain and does not kill the root structure. Scrub the area, dry it thoroughly, and run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower to control moisture.

However, if the musty smell persists or you see spots returning quickly, the growth is likely behind the paint or tiles. In JVC apartments, shared ventilation shafts can also spread spores to other units. This requires a professional inspection to assess the extent of the hidden problem and identify the moisture source, which is often a small leak or inadequate sealing.

Professional remediation is advised when the affected area is large, the mold returns after cleaning, or there is any suspicion of hidden growth. They will use containment procedures and air scrubbers to prevent cross-contamination during removal, which is crucial in an apartment building. A company with its own microbiology lab can also identify the species to confirm it is a common bathroom variety and not a more problematic type.
