How to treat and prevent closet mold in UAE villa?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has started getting these black speckles on my shoes and bags, especially after the humid weather last month. I’m constantly running the AC but it keeps coming back. What’s the most effective way to treat this and prevent it from happening again, specifically in a UAE villa?

That black speckling is a classic sign of a surface mould colony, and it's a very common issue in UAE villas, especially on exterior walls. The problem isn't just the closet's contents; it's the wall itself acting as a cold surface where humid air condenses, creating the perfect damp environment for mould to feed on dust and organic materials.

First, address the immediate problem. Remove all items from the closet. For hard surfaces like the wall and shelves, clean with a solution of detergent and warm water or a dedicated mould remover. Wear a mask and gloves. For your shoes and bags, wipe them down with a cloth dampened with a vinegar solution or an appropriate leather/ fabric cleaner. This is a surface-level fix; the mould will return unless you stop the moisture source.

The core issue is likely a temperature differential causing condensation on that exterior wall. Your AC is running, but the cold wall inside the closet may not be getting adequate airflow. To prevent recurrence, you must improve ventilation and reduce humidity in that enclosed space. Leave the closet doors open for several hours a day to allow conditioned air to circulate. If possible, install a louvered door instead of a solid one. Ensure the AC vent is not blocked and is directing some air into the closet. A small, battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber box placed inside the closet can also help significantly.

For a persistent issue, a professional inspection is recommended. The mould growth might be more extensive inside the wall cavity if there's a hidden leak or severe insulation issue. An expert can use a thermal imaging camera to identify the exact cold spots and moisture meters to quantify the problem. They can determine if the wall requires professional drying, antimicrobial treatment, or improved insulation—which is often the ultimate solution for exterior walls in our climate.
