Black mold in AC vent: DIY or professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making this weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and I just found patches of black mold inside the vent when I took the cover off. I’ve tried wiping it down with vinegar, but it seems to be coming back. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

DIY cleaning with vinegar is often insufficient for AC mold in Dubai's climate. The high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for regrowth, especially if the source is deeper within the unit or ductwork.

For a small, surface-level patch you've just discovered, a thorough cleaning with an EPA-approved fungicide can be a first step. However, the recurring damp smell strongly suggests the mold colony is more extensive than what's visible. Disturbing it without proper containment can spread spores throughout your apartment.

Professional remediation is recommended here. In Dubai, reputable companies follow strict protocols for containment, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to address the root cause and prevent regrowth. They can also identify if a clogged drain line or insufficient insulation is causing the condensation feeding the mold. For a definitive answer on the mold type and airborne spore levels, a lab test from a provider with in-house microbiology capabilities is the most reliable course of action.
