Is black mold in my shower urgent to remove?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's been growing in the corner of our master bathroom shower. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it spreading along the grout, and the musty smell is really strong now, especially after showers. Given how humid it's been in Dubai lately, how urgent is it that I get a professional to handle this, or is it something I can clean myself this weekend?

Yes, it is urgent to address. The combination of visible black mold, a strong musty smell, and your children's coughing symptoms means this should be a priority. In Dubai's high humidity, mold spores from the bathroom can easily circulate through your home's AC system, affecting air quality in other rooms.

For a small, surface-level patch on grout, a thorough DIY cleaning with a dedicated mold remover or a vinegar solution can be effective. However, given the symptoms and the description of it spreading, the mold may have penetrated deeper into the grout or behind the tiles where you can't see it. This is a common issue here due to the constant humidity and condensation.

A professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent. They can use moisture meters to check for hidden dampness within the walls and perform air quality testing to see if spore counts are elevated in your living areas, which would confirm the bathroom as the source of the respiratory irritation. Remediation involves containing the area, removing the affected materials like compromised grout, and addressing the underlying moisture source to prevent rapid regrowth.
