Safest way to clean black mold near kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks, and I just found a patch of black, fuzzy mold behind their bedroom wardrobe. We live in an older villa in Jumeirah, and I think the recent humidity made it worse. What’s the safest way to clean this myself without putting my family at risk?

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself with precautions. First, contain the area by sealing the room from the rest of the house and closing the AC vents to prevent spores from circulating. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles.
Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water; vinegar is effective on many common molds in our climate. Avoid bleach, as it only removes surface discoloration and doesn't address the moisture problem or the root structure. Scrub the area with the solution, then dry it thoroughly with a fan. The key is to fix the source of moisture—this is often condensation from an AC vent, a small leak, or humidity permeating the exterior wall in older Jumeirah villas. Given the location behind furniture and your children's persistent coughing, professional inspection is strongly advised. What appears as one patch can indicate a larger problem within the wall cavity. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the full extent and identify the species, as not all black-colored mold is the toxic 'black mold' (Stachybotrys), but all require proper handling. Their health symptoms, coupled with the humid conditions here, mean a lab analysis is the only way to confirm the type and potential risk. |
