How to prevent mold in humid Dubai apartment AC?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village seems to be constantly damp around the vents, and I keep finding small black spots on the walls behind my bedroom furniture. It's been getting worse since the humidity started rising a few weeks ago. I'm really worried it's mold and I want to stop it before it spreads any further. What is the most effective way to control this humidity and prevent mold growth in a Dubai apartment?

Maintain your AC temperature between 22-24°C. This range is cold enough for comfort but warm enough to prevent excessive condensation, which is the primary source of moisture for mold. Colder settings cause the unit to freeze up and then drip water when it cycles off.

Ensure all your AC drain lines are clear. A clogged drain line forces condensation back into the unit and ducting, creating a damp environment. This is a very common issue in Dubai apartments. You can often hear a gurgling sound from the indoor unit if the drain is partially blocked.

Run the AC's dry mode if available, especially during high humidity periods. This function prioritizes moisture removal over cooling. If you don't have a dry mode, running the fan on a continuous, low setting can help circulate air and reduce stagnant, damp pockets behind furniture.

Improve air circulation immediately. Move bedroom furniture at least six inches away from the walls to allow air to flow behind them. Stagnant air trapped behind cupboards or beds creates a cold surface where condensation forms and mold thrives.

For the existing black spots, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover can clean small surface areas on non-porous surfaces. However, this only addresses the visible symptom, not the underlying moisture problem.

Given the constant dampness around the vents, the issue is likely inside the AC unit or ductwork itself, which is beyond a surface cleaning. This requires a professional inspection and remediation. In Dubai, look for a provider that uses a microbiological lab to identify the mold species and can provide documented before-and-after testing to verify the unit is truly clean and the root cause has been addressed.
