How to treat damp wall mold behind furniture?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because we moved the furniture for cleaning. The wall feels slightly damp and it’s on the exterior wall facing the direction of last month's heavy rains. What’s the best way to treat this myself to stop it from coming back?

Black mold growth behind furniture on an exterior wall is a common issue in Dubai, especially after periods of heavy rain. The dampness is likely due to water intrusion through the wall, which is then trapped by the furniture, creating a perfect humid environment for mold. The persistent cough in your children is a legitimate concern, as this type of prolonged exposure can cause respiratory irritation.

For immediate, small-scale treatment, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water and scrub the area thoroughly. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not address the moisture source. After cleaning, allow the wall to dry completely with a fan before moving furniture back.

However, DIY cleaning only addresses the visible growth. The core issue is the moisture within the wall itself. In Dubai's climate, this requires a professional assessment to identify the exact point of water ingress—it could be a crack in the exterior render, a failed sealant, or internal condensation. Without fixing this leak, the mold will return.

Given the health symptoms and the structural nature of the dampness, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters to find the extent of the problem and recommend permanent repairs, which might involve exterior waterproofing or internal drainage measures. Verifiable before-and-after lab testing is the only way to confirm the environment is safe again for your family.
