Safely removing mold near coughing kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’m starting to panic. I finally pulled out the sofa in our Deira apartment to find a huge patch of black mold spreading up the wall behind it, probably from a slow leak I never noticed. We’ve been sleeping right next to this wall. What’s the safest way to get rid of it myself without making their symptoms worse?

Stop all DIY efforts immediately. With children experiencing respiratory symptoms and a large hidden mold colony, the risk of dispersing high concentrations of spores during removal is too great. Their prolonged exposure sleeping next to it means this is a serious indoor air quality issue.

The safest first step is to isolate the area. Keep the sofa pulled away and close the room's door, sealing the gap with tape and towels if possible. Run an exhaust fan in the room by venting it out a window, if available, to create negative pressure and prevent spores from spreading to the rest of the apartment. Do not use the central AC until the system has been inspected, as the mold spores may have entered and contaminated the ducts.

In Dubai's climate, hidden mold from condensation or slow leaks is common. Remediation requires more than cleaning the surface; the wall's interior may be compromised and require controlled demolition. Professional remediation is strongly advised here. They will use HEPA-filtered negative air machines and contain the area with plastic sheeting to prevent cross-contamination.

A reputable provider should conduct a full assessment, including moisture mapping to find the leak's source, and will provide before-and-after lab testing to verify the spore count has returned to safe, ambient levels. This documentation is critical for your peace of mind and for your landlord, as Dubai Municipality regulations hold property owners responsible for maintaining a habitable environment free of such hazards.
