AC mold issue: DIY fix or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a weird, damp odor every time it kicks on, and I just noticed some black speckles around the vent in the master bedroom. I’ve tried wiping it away with vinegar, but it came back within a couple of days. Is this something I can tackle myself with a store-bought spray, or do I need to call a professional for a proper mold inspection?

The damp odor and recurring black speckles indicate active mold growth inside the AC unit or ductwork, which is common here due to our high humidity and constant AC use. Vinegar only removes surface discoloration; it doesn't address the root colony or its spores.
For a central AC system, a DIY store-bought spray is unlikely to reach the main contamination sites—typically the cold evaporator coils and deep inside the ductwork where moisture accumulates. You're likely only treating the visible tip of the problem. Given the recurrence and the fact it's a central system serving your entire apartment, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use borescopes to inspect inside the ducts and often take tape-lift samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species. This is crucial, as some types common in AC systems can cause significant respiratory irritation, especially in our sealed indoor environments. The inspection will pinpoint the moisture source, which must be resolved to prevent regrowth. |
