Is black mold making my family sick? Urgent?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah villa. It's been super humid lately and I'm worried it's spreading quickly because my youngest has developed a rash on her arm. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, and should we be staying somewhere else until it's fixed?

Black mold in a Dubai villa, especially during humid periods, can absolutely cause the symptoms you're describing. The combination of high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use creates ideal conditions for mold growth behind furniture and in walls. The coughing and skin irritation are common reactions to mold spores.

Given the symptoms in your children, this situation should be treated with urgency. For infants and those with developing respiratory systems, prolonged exposure carries higher risk. The rash could be a contact dermatitis from the mold itself or a reaction to the humidity that fostered its growth.

You should arrange for a professional inspection. In the UAE, reputable companies use lab analysis to identify the specific species, as "black mold" is a broad term and not all types are equally concerning. This identification is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol.

Until an inspector can assess, increase ventilation in the room if possible and avoid disturbing the area, as this can release more spores. For severe respiratory distress, consult a doctor and mention the potential mold exposure. It is often prudent for sensitive individuals to stay elsewhere until the extent of the problem is known and contained. The remediation process itself can temporarily increase airborne spore levels.

The long-term solution involves not just removing the visible growth but identifying and correcting the moisture source—often condensation from AC units, a plumbing leak, or water ingress from a poorly sealed window—to prevent it from returning.
