How to remove black mold in Dubai bedroom myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and the room always feels a bit damp. What’s the best way to handle this ourselves, or should I call a professional cleaning company here in Dubai?

That damp feeling and wall location suggest a condensation issue, common in Dubai's climate where AC-cooled walls meet humid outdoor air. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can handle it yourself safely.

First, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and consider covering the doorway with plastic sheeting. Mix a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle; vinegar is effective on many common molds here and is less harsh than bleach. Spray the area thoroughly, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff-bristled brush. Wipe clean with disposable cloths and seal all waste in a plastic bag.

Crucially, address the moisture source. This is likely condensation from the temperature differential. After cleaning, wipe down that wall regularly with a dry cloth to remove moisture. Improve air circulation in the closet by not overpacking it and leaving the door ajar. A renewable desiccant like silica gel can help control humidity in the enclosed space.

If the mold returns quickly, covers more than a square foot, or you notice a persistent musty smell, it's time for a professional assessment. Hidden moisture behind the wall is a possibility. A certified inspector can use a moisture meter to find the exact source and recommend remediation, which often involves correcting insulation issues.
