Should I clean moldy AC myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making us all cough and feel stuffy for a couple of months now. I finally pulled the filter out and the inside of the unit looks like it has black and greenish fuzzy patches all over it. I’m handy and want to clean it myself with bleach, but my wife is worried we’ll just spread the spores and make it worse. Is this a DIY job or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai?

Based on your description, you absolutely need a professional inspection and remediation. The black and green fuzzy patches indicate active growth, and DIY cleaning with bleach is ineffective and can aerosolize spores, spreading contamination throughout your apartment.
In Dubai's climate, AC units are a primary source of condensation and high humidity, creating a perfect environment for mold. A surface clean won't address the root cause or the contamination within the unit's deeper mechanics, like the evaporator coils and drip pans. This is why symptoms persist. Professional inspection here involves more than a visual check. It includes air and surface sampling to identify the species—some types like Aspergillus are common here and require specific protocols. They will also use industrial HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial coatings to contain spores during cleaning, which is not possible with DIY methods. For a case with ongoing health symptoms and visible growth, a certified inspection and remediation is the only way to ensure the problem is resolved safely and effectively. |
