Black mold in bedroom: professional cleaning or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an exterior wall. It's been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. My wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and a headache every morning for the past week. Is this something we need to get professionally cleaned immediately, or can we handle it ourselves with a store-bought spray?

Given the location on an exterior wall and the timing with Dubai's high humidity, this is likely condensation-related mold, a very common issue here. The symptoms your wife is experiencing—morning stuffy nose and headaches—are consistent with exposure to mold spores circulating in the bedroom air overnight.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, a thorough DIY approach can be effective. Use a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated fungicidal cleaner from a hardware store. Never use bleach, as it only removes the colour and doesn't kill the roots. Crucially, you must identify and address the moisture source. Wipe down the wall to check for recurrent condensation; improving air circulation in the closet or using a moisture absorber can help.

However, professional remediation is strongly advised in your case. The wall interior may hold more moisture and hidden growth, and the health symptoms indicate the spores are already affecting your indoor air quality. A certified inspector can use a moisture meter to assess the wall's saturation and perform air quality testing to identify the spore types and concentration levels, which is vital for determining the correct remediation protocol. This step is important for ensuring the problem is fully resolved and doesn't recur, which is a frequent challenge in our climate.
