How to safely remove black mold from closet and clothes?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's been incredibly humid in Dubai lately. I’m really worried it’s spread to our belongings – what’s the safest and most effective way to clean this ourselves, and should we throw out all the clothes that were stored in there?

Black mold in a closet on an exterior wall is a classic sign of condensation due to the high temperature differential between Dubai's humid outdoor air and your air-conditioned indoor space. The wall is likely a "cold bridge," where moisture from the warm, humid air condenses on the cooler interior surface, creating the perfect damp environment for mold to grow.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach alternative (never mix chemicals). Dry the area completely with a fan immediately after cleaning. The clothes should be fine. Wash them in hot water if the fabric allows, and sun-dry them outdoors, as UV light is a natural disinfectant. You only need to discard items if the mold growth is extensive and has rotted the material.

However, since the mold is on a structural exterior wall, the infestation inside the wall cavity could be much larger than what is visible. Surface cleaning often misses the root cause. For peace of mind and to ensure it doesn't return, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is recommended to assess the wall's condition. Companies with their own microbiology labs can also test to confirm the mold type, which is important for determining the correct remediation protocol if it is a more problematic species.
