Could mold behind sofa be making my kids sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop and getting headaches ever since the weather turned more humid. I finally pulled out the sofa in our living room to find a big black patch of mold on the wall behind it, right where they always sit to watch TV. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed this. Could this mold be the reason they’ve been so sick?

Yes, the black mold behind your sofa is very likely the cause of your children's persistent coughing and headaches. In Dubai's high humidity, this is a common scenario where furniture placed against exterior walls creates a cold trap, leading to condensation and mold growth out of sight.

The constant coughing and headaches are classic symptoms of mold exposure, particularly in children who are more sensitive. The mold releases spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) into the air your family breathes, which act as irritants to the respiratory system and can trigger these reactions.

For a situation like this in a Jumeirah villa, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg; the mold may have spread inside the wall cavity. A proper assessment involves moisture mapping to find the water source and air or surface sampling to identify the mold species. This is crucial, as some types like Stachybotrys (true "black mold") produce mycotoxins that require a more careful remediation approach.

Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen the problem. Isolate the area by keeping the children away and improve ventilation. The long-term solution involves fixing the moisture source—often poor insulation or a slight leak in an external wall—and then having the mold professionally remediated to ensure it is completely removed and the air quality is restored.
