Is black mold in my shower dangerous to remove myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling. It’s been worse since the weather got more humid. Is this dangerous black mold, and what’s the best way to get rid of it properly without having to call in expensive professionals right away?

The black spots in your shower corner are likely a common mold, not necessarily the infamous "toxic black mold" (Stachybotrys). In Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer months, bathrooms are prime locations for mold growth due to condensation from hot showers and less ventilation.

For a small, surface-level patch (under one square foot), DIY removal is often possible. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area with a dedicated mold-killing cleaner or a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during and after the process. The key is not just to clean the visible mold but to address the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet walls to reduce condensation.

If the mold returns quickly, has a musty odor, covers a large area, or is inside the wall/ceiling cavity (indicating a possible leak from the villa's plumbing or roof), professional assessment is recommended. They can perform lab testing to identify the species and locate the hidden moisture source, which is critical for a permanent solution. In many Al Barsha villas, the issue is often inadequate ventilation or a small, unseen leak.
