Safely clean black mold behind toilet with kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I’m starting to panic because I just found a patch of black mold growing behind the toilet in our master bathroom. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and the humidity has been awful lately, even with the AC running constantly. What’s the safest way for me to clean this myself without exposing my family to more spores?

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself safely. The key is containment to prevent spreading spores. First, keep the bathroom door closed and the exhaust fan running during and after cleaning to vent spores outside.
Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle—avoid bleach as it only removes the colour and can release harsh fumes in a confined space. Lightly mist the mould patch to dampen it and minimise airborne spores. Wipe it away with a disposable cloth, working gently to avoid agitation. Place all used materials in a sealed plastic bag immediately for disposal. In Dubai’s high humidity, mould will return unless the moisture source is addressed. Condensation from constant AC use often creates damp microclimates behind toilets and under sinks. Use a moisture meter to check the wall; consistent dampness suggests a hidden leak that needs fixing. Improve ventilation by running the exhaust fan for 30 minutes after showers and consider a small dehumidifier for that room. Given the location behind a toilet and your children’s respiratory symptoms, professional inspection is advisable. Black mould isn’t always the toxic Stachybotrys species, but only a lab culture can confirm the type. A certified inspector can identify if the growth is superficial or has penetrated porous materials like drywall, which would require removal rather than cleaning. They can also perform air quality testing to determine if spores have spread to other parts of the home, which is a common issue with villa AC systems. |
