Should I call landlord or cleaner for Dubai villa mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our wardrobe. It's been really humid lately and I'm worried it's mold. What's the best way to handle this in Dubai – should I call the landlord first or just get a professional cleaning company myself?

Contact your landlord first, as they are legally responsible for addressing structural issues like this under Dubai rental law. Document the mold with photos and send a formal written notification, as this creates a record of the issue.

Given Dubai's high humidity and the fact it's behind a wardrobe, this is likely a condensation issue from lack of air circulation, a very common problem here. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can disturb toxic spores and only bleaches the surface, leaving the root cause intact.

For a case this visible and spreading, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the moisture source and species. A reputable provider uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source, then takes lab samples to identify the mold type—this is critical as some species like Aspergillus require more stringent containment during remediation. Your landlord may have a preferred company, but you can also request one that provides documented before-and-after testing to verify the area is truly resolved.
