Can I clean AC mold myself or hire professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from mold in our villa's AC vents in Al Barsha. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black spots around the vent when I changed the filter last week. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I need to hire a professional company for a full AC duct cleaning, and what's the typical cost for that in Dubai?

Cleaning visible black spots on the AC vent yourself can be done, but it addresses only a small part of the problem. A simple wipe-down with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) on the accessible vent cover is safe for non-porous surfaces. However, this is often just a surface fix.

The real concern in Dubai's climate is inside the ductwork and the AC evaporator coil, where high humidity and condensation create an ideal environment for mold to thrive out of sight. What you see on the vent is frequently just the visible end of a larger, hidden colony. Disturbing it without proper containment can spread spores throughout your home, potentially worsening your children's coughing.

For a suspected systemic issue, especially with health symptoms present, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use cameras to assess the entire duct system and take surface or air samples for lab analysis to identify the mold type, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. A proper duct cleaning involves specialized HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial treatment of the entire system, not just the visible parts.

Costs for professional assessment and cleaning vary significantly based on the villa's size, AC system type (central vs. splits), and the extent of contamination. It is best to request assessments from several certified providers who can document their findings and methodology.
