Is AC mold causing our coughing and allergies?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and my own allergies are going crazy, and I’m starting to suspect it’s our AC unit. I pulled the filter out yesterday and found patches of black, fuzzy stuff around the edges and the air coming out smells damp. We’re in an older building in Deira. Could this be black mold and is it the reason we’re all feeling so sick?

The black substance you found is likely mold, and it is a common cause of the symptoms you're describing. In Dubai's humid climate, AC units are a primary breeding ground for mold because condensation constantly provides moisture. The damp smell and visible growth confirm the unit is contaminated and is blowing spores into your air, which can cause persistent coughing, congestion, and worsened allergies, especially in children.
What you describe warrants a professional inspection. While many dark molds are irritants, the species Stachybotrys chartarum (true "black mold") is less common but produces mycotoxins and requires a different remediation approach. Only a lab culture can identify the specific type and the actual health risk. In older Deira buildings, central duct systems can also be contaminated, meaning just cleaning the filter isn't enough. For immediate relief, you can clean the accessible filter with a diluted vinegar solution, but this is a surface fix. The mold is likely deep in the coil and drip pan. A proper remediation involves a full disassembly and cleaning of the internal components with EPA-approved biocides, followed by testing to verify the spore count in your air has returned to a safe level. Given your family's symptoms, this is the recommended course of action. |
