Can a recent musty smell be harmful?« Back to Previous Page

After the recent renovation work on our new flat, we’ve noticed a persistent musty smell that’s lingered even after thorough cleaning. My husband has started to experience some breathing issues, and I’m really concerned about any potential health effects from this. We moved in two years ago, but the smell only appeared around a month ago. Has anyone else experienced similar issues or know what could be causing it?

Certainly! A musty smell can indeed be concerning and might indicate the presence of mold or other microorganisms. In Dubai/UAE, indoor air quality is a critical concern due to the varying climatic conditions and high humidity levels that could exacerbate such issues.

The UAE has several local guidelines and regulations regarding building standards and environmental quality which are enforced by authorities like the Department of Municipalities and Urban Planning (DM&UP). These ensure that buildings meet minimum requirements for indoor air quality, ventilation systems, and material use to prevent adverse health effects from contaminants. However, it's important to note that musty odors might not always be visible, making their presence harder to determine without professional inspection.

Given the recent renovation work in your flat, this could potentially be a source of moisture or disturbed mold growth. The UAE often sees cases where materials used during renovations retain moisture and create an environment conducive for mold proliferation. It's crucial to act promptly if you notice such smells as they can lead to health issues including respiratory problems, allergies, and even more severe conditions like asthma exacerbation.

I would recommend having a professional inspection carried out by a certified environmental consultant or hygienist familiar with UAE regulations. They can perform comprehensive air quality tests, moisture level assessments, and identify potential sources of the musty smell. This is particularly important considering your husband's breathing issues, as prolonged exposure to mold spores could worsen his condition.

If you decide to proceed with an inspection, ensure that the company adheres to UAE standards and has a good track record in this field. Additionally, keep detailed records of any observations or symptoms you might experience, which can be valuable during the assessment process.

In the meantime, maintaining good indoor air circulation by opening windows when possible, using dehumidifiers, and avoiding overwatering plants can help mitigate moisture levels. Regular cleaning and drying of damp areas are also recommended to prevent mold growth from starting in the first place.
