Found mold behind sofa, kids coughing. Doctor visit?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled out the sofa in our Deira apartment to find a lost toy and discovered a huge patch of black mold on the wall behind it, probably from a slow AC leak. I’m really worried about their health. What are the immediate steps I should take to clean this and should I take them to a doctor right away?

Yes, take them to a doctor and mention the mold exposure. Persistent coughing in children can be a reaction to mold spores, which are now airborne in your home. A physician can assess if it's an allergic response or something requiring treatment, and they can provide appropriate relief for their symptoms.

For the mold itself, your immediate priority is containment. Do not attempt to clean the large patch yourself, as this will aerosolize a massive amount of spores. Isolate the area by closing the room's door and sealing the gap with tape and plastic sheeting if possible. Move your family to a different part of the apartment and increase ventilation in common areas by opening windows, if outdoor humidity and air quality permit.

The root cause must be addressed. In Dubai's climate, that hidden moisture is almost certainly from condensation or a slow leak from your AC unit, a very common issue here. A professional inspection is critical to locate and repair the source of the water intrusion; otherwise, the mold will return.

For remediation, a patch discovered behind furniture is often extensive behind the walls. Professional remediation is strongly advised for anything beyond a very small, surface-level area. Proper remediation involves containment, HEPA filtration to capture spores, and safe removal of contaminated materials. The company you hire should be able to provide before-and-after testing data from an independent lab to verify the air quality is safe, which is the only way to have real peace of mind for your family's health.
