Black mold in closet: call management or specialist?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoe boxes. It's an interior wall that shares a bathroom, and I'm worried the issue might be bigger than it looks. What's the best way to handle this in Dubai – should I call the building management first or get a specialist to check for moisture?

Start by calling building management. In Dubai, landlords and building owners are generally responsible for addressing structural issues that cause mold, such as leaks from plumbing or a building envelope breach. They should send their maintenance team to inspect the wall shared with the bathroom for a potential leak.

However, if the management's inspection is inconclusive or the leak's source is not obvious, a specialist inspection is the next step. The high humidity here means a small leak can create significant hidden condensation within walls. A professional uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact moisture source and extent, which is often not visible. They can then provide a verified report for building management to act upon.

While you wait, move the shoe boxes to improve air circulation. Wipe the visible mold with a diluted detergent solution, but avoid bleach as it doesn't address the underlying moisture problem. For a confirmed internal leak, remediation is needed to dry the structure and remove the mold to prevent it from returning, which is where a certified remediation provider is necessary.
