How to remove bathroom mold and prevent spreading behind tiles?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Village Circle villa for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the grout in the corner of our master bathroom shower. It's been extra humid lately and I think the ventilation isn't great in there. What's the best way to get rid of this mold for good, and should I be worried about it spreading behind the tiles?

That black mold in your shower grout is a common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity and condensation from AC use. It's likely surface mold feeding on soap scum and moisture.

For a small area, scrub it with a dedicated grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar. Wear a mask and gloves. After cleaning, ensure the area is completely dry. Improving ventilation is critical; run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider a small dehumidifier.

The concern about it spreading behind the tiles is valid. If the grout is cracked or the sealant is failing, moisture can seep into the wall cavity. Persistent mold that returns quickly after cleaning, a musty odor, or any softness or discoloration in the surrounding walls are strong indicators of a deeper problem.

In such cases, a professional inspection is advised. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess conditions behind tiles without destructive digging. For villas in JVC, where construction standards can vary, this is a prudent step to prevent structural damage. Remediation companies with their own microbiology labs can identify the mold type and provide a targeted, evidence-based removal plan to ensure it doesn't return.
