Can I remove JVC mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Village Circle. It’s gotten worse since the weather got more humid, and I'm worried about my family's health. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

The black spots spreading behind your wardrobe in JVC are a classic sign of a condensation-related mold issue, very common here due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The wall behind furniture becomes a cold spot where moisture condenses, creating the perfect environment for mold.

For a small area (less than one square meter), you can attempt cleaning yourself. Do not use bleach; it is mostly water and can worsen the problem by adding moisture. Instead, use a dedicated mold remover or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Scrub the area thoroughly, but more importantly, address the cause. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation, and ensure your AC is set to a consistent, reasonable temperature to minimize temperature swings that cause condensation.

However, given that it's behind a wardrobe and has been spreading for two years, the growth is likely more extensive than what's visible. It may have penetrated the gypsum board or insulation. In this case, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to locate the full extent of the problem and identify the precise moisture source. DIY cleaning often just removes the surface stain while the root cause remains, leading to rapid regrowth.

For health assurance, especially with a family, a company that provides before-and-after lab testing is ideal. This verifies the mold species is addressed and the spore count in the room has returned to a safe level, which is the only way to be certain the problem is resolved.
