Black mold in Jumeirah home: DIY or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Jumeirah Village Circle. It's been really humid lately and I think it's from condensation on the wall. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I just call a professional company right away?

Black mold growth behind furniture in JVC is a common issue due to our high humidity and the temperature difference between air-conditioned rooms and the warm exterior walls, which causes condensation. For a small area (less than one square meter) you can attempt DIY.

First, address the moisture source. Ensure your AC is set to a consistent temperature, ideally between 22-24°C, to minimize condensation. Improve air circulation by moving the wardrobe slightly away from the wall and using a dehumidifier or exhaust fan in the room. For cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the affected wall area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Allow the area to dry completely.

However, if the mold has penetrated porous materials like drywall or the wooden back of the wardrobe, or if the affected area is large, DIY cleaning will only address the surface and the mold will likely return. The persistent humidity here means the root cause is often complex. In these cases, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the full extent of the problem, the specific species present (as some are more problematic than others), and to implement a remediation plan that includes containment and air scrubbing to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the home. A science-driven company can also provide post-remediation verification testing to confirm the space is truly clean.
