Safe DIY removal of black mold in toddler's room?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of my toddler's bedroom closet. It's been so humid lately and I'm worried it's making his allergies worse, as he's been sneezing non-stop in the mornings. What's the safest way to get rid of this myself without using harsh chemicals around my kids?

The UAE's high humidity, especially during summer, creates ideal conditions for mold growth in closets and corners with poor air circulation. For a small patch (under one square foot) in your toddler's room, a careful DIY approach is possible.

First, ensure it's surface mold on a non-porous material like painted drywall or laminate. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Keep your toddler and any pets out of the room during the process and for several hours after. Open windows for ventilation if possible.

The safest cleaning solution for a child's room is a mixture of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) or a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. Avoid bleach, as it releases harsh fumes and doesn't prevent regrowth. Spray the affected area, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub gently with a disposable cloth. Dry the area completely with a fan immediately after cleaning; residual moisture will cause it to return quickly.

Since this is in a closet, check for a leak from an adjacent bathroom or AC condensate line. Improve air flow by leaving the closet door ajar and using a small desiccant dehumidifier inside. If the mold returns quickly, has penetrated porous materials like drywall, or covers an area larger than a square foot, professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the moisture source and assess for hidden growth.
