How to treat moldy items and prevent closet mold?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started getting these black speckles on my leather bags and shoes, and it’s definitely mold. I noticed it after that really humid spell we had last month, and even though I run the AC constantly, that corner just feels damp. What’s the best way to treat the items already affected and what can I do to stop the mold from coming back in that specific spot?

First, treat the affected leather items by gently wiping them with a solution of equal parts water and 70% isopropyl alcohol, using a soft, clean cloth. Test on a small, hidden area first. Allow them to air dry completely away from the damp closet, but not in direct sunlight which can damage leather. For severe mold growth on porous items, a professional restoration service may be necessary to salvage them.

The recurrence is likely due to a cold spot on that outside wall. In Dubai's climate, these walls can be significantly warmer than your AC-cooled indoor air, causing condensation to form inside the wall or on its interior surface, creating a constant damp environment mold thrives in. Simply running the AC isn't enough for these thermal bridges.

To prevent it from returning, you must address the moisture source. Improve air circulation in the closet by leaving the door ajar and using a small battery-operated fan. Ensure the room's AC vent isn't blocked and is directing air into that corner. A portable dehumidifier placed nearby can help, but for a persistent issue, the wall itself may need investigation for insulation flaws or hidden leaks.

For a problem isolated to one area, a professional inspection can identify the exact cause—often through thermal imaging to find the condensation point—and recommend targeted solutions like improving wall insulation or applying anti-mold coatings. This is more effective than general cleaning for a recurring issue.
