Black mold in AC vent: DIY bleach or call pro??« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been making a weird damp smell for a couple of weeks, and now I’ve spotted black spots around the vent on the ceiling. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it’s spreading and I’m worried it’s in the ducts. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company?

That damp smell and visible black spots spreading after cleaning indicate active growth, likely due to condensation inside your AC unit—a very common issue here. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and can push spores deeper; it also fails to address the root moisture problem inside the unit and ducts.

For a central AC system with visible growth on the ceiling, the mold is almost certainly inside the ductwork. Spores will continue to recirculate. DIY methods cannot reach the contamination source and may worsen the spread.

The high humidity and constant AC use in Dubai create a perfect environment for this. The issue isn't just the vent cover; it's the entire system. A professional inspection with a borescope is needed to assess the extent of contamination inside the ducts and the evaporator coil. They can identify and rectify the moisture source, which is often a clogged condensate drain line.

In many cases, remediation involves sealing off and cleaning the supply and return ducts, deep-cleaning the coil, and applying an EPA-approved antimicrobial treatment. After remediation, a post-test verification is the only way to confirm the air is clean. For a central system, this is a job for certified professionals.
