Urgent: Black mold in bedroom, need professional or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of our building in Jumeirah Village Circle. I’m worried because my husband has started sneezing a lot more in the mornings. Given the humidity here, is this something I need to get a professional to handle immediately this week, or can I just clean it myself this weekend?

Black mold in a bedroom closet on an exterior wall is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and temperature differentials causing condensation. Your husband's increased sneezing is a legitimate concern, as this type of mold can irritate respiratory systems.

Given its location on an exterior wall, this is likely a condensation issue, not a leak. You can clean a small patch (under one square foot) yourself this weekend using a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, this only addresses the surface growth, not the moisture source.

For a lasting solution, a professional assessment is recommended. They can identify the root cause—often insufficient insulation in the building envelope—and verify the mold type. In many JVC buildings, this requires a thermal imaging scan to find the condensation point. DIY cleaning is a temporary measure; without addressing the underlying cause, the mold will almost certainly return. If the patch is larger than a square foot or you see it returning quickly after cleaning, seek a professional inspection.
