How to clean mold and prevent it from returning?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little bit, and now I’ve found black spots spreading on the back wall and on some of my shoes stored in there. I had maintenance fix the leak last week, but I’m worried the mold will just come back because the closet feels damp. What’s the most effective way to clean this and what can I do to keep the area completely dry for good?

The damp closet is a classic Dubai issue – fixing the leak is the first step, but the hidden moisture in the wall and the high humidity will cause the mold to return. For a small area, you can clean non-porous surfaces with a solution of detergent and water. However, porous materials like drywall and especially leather shoes can harbor deep mold roots that cleaning won't remove; these items often need to be discarded.

To prevent its return, you must address the humidity. That closet will remain a problem without constant, dry airflow. Leave the closet door open as often as possible and consider using a small desiccant dehumidifier inside. The root cause is likely that the enclosed space is much colder than the rest of the room, causing condensation. Ensure the AC unit's condensate drain line is fully clear and that the door has adequate ventilation gaps.

For a recurring issue like this, a professional inspection is wise. They can use a moisture meter to confirm the wall is dry inside and assess if the wallboard needs replacement. In many villas, the insulation behind the AC unit is compromised, leading to chronic dampness. A proper remediation will treat the area with antimicrobial solutions and verify with post-cleaning testing that the spore count has been measurably reduced.
