Black mold in damp closet, first step in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it feels slightly damp. I'm really worried this is mold, especially with the humidity lately. What's the first step I should take to deal with this properly in Dubai?

Stop moving clothes around or touching the area. Disturbing it can release spores into the air. Your first step is to identify the moisture source. In Dubai, this is often condensation from an AC duct running inside that wall or a slight leak from the building envelope during humid weather.

Open the closet doors, improve air circulation with a fan if possible, and run a dehumidifier nearby. This won't fix the root cause but can help slow the spread before professional assessment. For a concealed damp spot like this, a DIY approach often fails because the moisture source remains.

Given the wall faces outside and feels damp, this likely requires a professional inspection. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the exact source behind the wall—a crucial step that Dubai Municipality's guidelines emphasize for proper remediation. They can also take a tape lift sample for lab analysis to confirm the type of mold, which dictates the remediation protocol.
