How to safely remove black mold and health risks?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It must have been growing slowly because the room has felt damp for a while, but I only spotted it today while deep cleaning. With the humidity lately, I'm worried it's gotten worse. What's the fastest and safest way to deal with this, and should we be concerned about our health having slept in this room for so long?

Black mold in a bedroom closet is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation that can get trapped in enclosed spaces. The immediate health risks for most healthy adults are typically irritation-based—worsened allergies, congestion, or a persistent cough. However, prolonged exposure can lead to more significant respiratory issues, especially for children, the elderly, or anyone with asthma or a compromised immune system.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can often handle it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted bleach solution (check manufacturer guidelines for surfaces). Scrub the area thoroughly, let the solution sit for 15 minutes, then wipe it clean and ensure the area is completely dry. Discard any porous materials (like cardboard boxes) that were in direct contact with the mold.

The critical step is identifying and fixing the moisture source. In a closet, it's often poor air circulation or a cold spot from an AC unit causing condensation. Leave the closet doors open, use a small desiccant dehumidifier, or position a fan to improve airflow. If the mold returns quickly, covers a larger area, or is inside the wall, a professional inspection is recommended to assess hidden growth and the true moisture source. They can provide documented lab analysis to identify the species and confirm the remediation was successful.
