How to remove black mold in Dubai bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It must have been growing slowly because we only spotted it when we were doing a deep clean this weekend. I'm really worried about it spreading, especially since our AC unit is in the hallway right outside that room. What's the most effective way to get rid of this ourselves, or is this a job for a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Black mold in a bedroom closet is common here due to our high humidity and the way AC can create condensation in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces. The first step is to identify and stop the moisture source. Check for a leaking pipe in that wall, condensation from an AC duct, or if the closet is an exterior wall where heat transfer is causing dampness.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach; it only removes the colour and can worsen indoor air quality. After cleaning, the area must be dried completely with a fan. Dispose of any porous materials like cardboard boxes or fabrics that were in direct contact with the mold.

However, because your AC unit is nearby, there is a significant risk of cross-contamination. Mold spores are easily disturbed and can travel through the air, potentially entering the AC system and spreading throughout your home. This is the primary reason a professional assessment is often recommended in such scenarios.

A reputable inspector will use a moisture meter to find the exact water source and an air pump to test for spore levels in the closet versus other rooms. This data determines if the AC system has been affected and if remediation is needed. DIY cleaning addresses the visible growth but often misses the hidden moisture problem and airborne spread, leading to quick recurrence. For a situation involving a critical area like a bedroom and a nearby AC, a professional inspection is the most effective way to ensure it is resolved completely and safely.
