How to remove closet mold and prevent recurrence?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started to get these black speckles on the leather bags and shoes I stored in the back, and it's definitely mold. I only noticed it after the recent humidity spike, and now I'm worried it's spread to my clothes. What's the most effective way to kill the existing mold and what kind of dehumidifier or moisture absorber should I put in there to stop this from happening again?

First, remove all affected items from the closet. For leather goods, wipe them down with a solution of 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30% water, then let them air dry completely away from sunlight. For non-porous closet surfaces, a diluted white vinegar solution (one part vinegar to one part water) is effective for killing surface mold. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores.
The root cause is almost certainly high humidity trapped in an enclosed space. After a thorough cleaning, prevention is key. For a standard bedroom closet in Dubai, a compact electric dehumidifier is the most reliable solution, as moisture absorbers like silica gel may be insufficient for our climate. Look for a unit with a capacity suitable for a small room and an auto-shutoff function for when the tank is full. Run it continuously, especially during the more humid summer months. Ensure there is adequate air circulation. Leave the closet doors slightly ajar when possible and avoid overpacking items. If the mold growth is extensive, has a musty odour that persists, or you suspect it has spread into the walls, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the full scope and identify any hidden moisture sources. |
