Black mold behind dresser: DIY clean or call profesional?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom dresser in our Jumeirah apartment. It’s been really humid lately and I think it’s been growing there for a while, hidden from view. I’m worried about their health but also not sure if this is a common thing I can just clean myself with bleach.
Is this something I should call a professional mold remediation company for, or can I handle it safely on my own?

Black spots behind furniture in a Jumeirah apartment are a common issue due to our high humidity and condensation from air conditioning. The first step is to determine the extent. If the area is small (less than one square meter), the surface is non-porous (like painted plaster), and there is no musty odor, you can attempt to clean it yourself.
For DIY, avoid bleach as it only removes surface color and can push moisture deeper. Use a detergent solution or a dedicated mold cleaner. Scrub the area, dry it completely, and address the moisture source—this is often condensation from an AC unit set too cold or poor airflow behind the furniture. Keep the area ventilated and monitor it. However, given the symptoms your children are experiencing, a DIY approach carries risk. Coughing can be a reaction to the spores disturbed during cleaning. More importantly, the visible spots might only be a fraction of the problem; the mold could have penetrated the wall or be growing in the AC system itself, which you cannot see. Professional inspection is strongly recommended here. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the full extent of the hidden moisture and mold. They can also take an air sample for lab analysis to identify the species, which is critical for understanding potential health risks and planning the correct remediation. In Dubai, reputable remediators follow standards like the IICRC S520 to ensure the mold is contained and removed, not just spread throughout your home. The goal is to fix the moisture problem and verify the air is clean post-remediation, which is what your family needs. |
