Is AC mold causing my kids' constant cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing constantly since we got back from the summer break, and I’m starting to worry. I’ve just noticed what looks like black speckles around the edges of the AC vent in their bedroom here in our Jumeirah villa. Could this be mold causing their allergies, and what’s the safest way to get it tested and cleaned with them in the house?

Yes, it very well could be. The black speckles you're seeing are a classic sign of microbial growth, often mold, which thrives in the condensation from AC units, especially in Dubai's humid climate. This is a common trigger for persistent respiratory irritation like coughing, particularly in children.
The safest approach involves two steps: verification and remediation. First, have a professional inspect and test the substance. A proper test involves taking a swab or tape-lift sample from the vent and the inside of the AC unit, then having it analyzed by an accredited microbiology lab to identify the exact species. This is crucial because it confirms the hazard level and guides the cleanup method. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as this can aerosolize spores and make the problem much worse for your children. For remediation, hire a company that uses containment procedures—like sealing off the room with plastic sheeting and using HEPA-filtered negative air machines—to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the house during cleaning. The entire AC system, including the hidden internal evaporator coils and drip pan, must be thoroughly cleaned with specialized biocides. Ensure the company provides before-and-after lab reports to verify the count of airborne spores has been measurably reduced. It's often advisable for the family to be out of the home during the actual cleaning process. |
