How to control humidity in master bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been feeling really damp lately, especially in the walk-in closet where we keep our clothes. I’ve started noticing a few small black speckles in the corner near the ceiling and my husband’s winter jackets have a faint musty odor we can’t get rid of. What’s the most effective way to control the humidity in that specific area to stop this from getting worse?

The dampness and black speckles you're seeing are classic signs of a localised humidity problem, very common in Dubai's climate. The closet is likely a "cold spot" where warm, humid air from the rest of the room meets a cooler surface (like an exterior wall), causing condensation and mould growth.

Start by improving air circulation, as stagnant air is the main culprit. Keep the closet doors open as much as possible and ensure bedroom doors and windows are sealed properly to prevent humid outdoor air from entering. Run your AC consistently, even when you're out, to maintain a stable indoor humidity level below 60%, which significantly discourages mould growth. Using a standalone dehumidifier in the bedroom, especially during the more humid night-time hours, can provide a measurable and targeted reduction in moisture.

For the closet itself, avoid overpacking clothes, as this restricts airflow. Consider using moisture-absorbing products like silica gel desiccant bags placed on shelves. Have your AC unit serviced to ensure it is draining condensation properly and functioning at peak dehumidifying capacity.

Given the visible speckles and musty odour, which indicate active growth, these measures will help control the environment but may not address existing mould. The most effective step is to have a professional inspection. They can identify the moisture source (like a minor condensation leak within the wall or from the AC system) and test the mould to determine the species, which dictates the appropriate remediation method. This is crucial for ensuring it is safely removed and doesn't return.
