AC mold behind unit: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been blowing out a faint damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing small black spots forming on the wall right behind the bedroom unit. With the humidity lately, it seems to be getting worse. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar spray or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service?

The black spots and damp smell indicate active mold growth, likely fueled by condensation from your AC unit interacting with JVC's high humidity. This is a common issue in Dubai where ACs run year-round.

For a small area (under one square foot), a DIY approach can be tried. Turn off the AC unit, wear an N95 mask and gloves, and clean the visible spots on the wall with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution. However, this only addresses surface mold. The critical source is often inside the AC unit itself—clogged drain lines, a dirty evaporator coil, or a saturated insulation pad behind the unit. DIY cleaning rarely resolves these internal issues.

If the smell persists or the spots reappear quickly, the problem is internal and requires a professional assessment. Persistent dampness inside the unit will continue to feed mold growth and spread spores throughout your apartment. In such cases, a proper inspection and remediation are needed to identify and correct the moisture source, clean the internal components, and treat the affected wall area to prevent recurrence.
