How to permanently remove black mold from bathroom tiles?« Back to Previous Page

My ensuite bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I finally pulled back the shower curtain today and found a bunch of black spots along the bottom of the wall and in the grout between the tiles. It’s been so humid lately that the window doesn't seem to help at all. What’s the best way to get rid of this for good without having to call my landlord immediately?

Black mold in bathrooms is common here due to our high humidity, especially in enclosed spaces like ensuite showers. For a small, surface-level area you've described, a thorough DIY cleaning can be effective.

Start by ventilating the area as much as possible. Wear a mask and gloves. For non-porous tile surfaces, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated bathroom mold remover applied with a stiff brush is often sufficient. For mold embedded in the grout, you may need to scrape out the affected areas after cleaning and re-grunt to prevent it from returning. The key is to dry the area completely immediately after showering; use a squeegee on the walls and a dedicated bathroom fan if you have one, running it for at least 30 minutes after use.

Permanent removal requires controlling the moisture source. In Dubai's climate, air conditioning is your primary dehumidifier. Ensure your AC is running consistently to reduce overall indoor humidity levels that condense on cool bathroom surfaces. If the mold is widespread, has a persistent musty odor, or you see it spreading behind sealants, it may indicate a deeper issue. In such cases, a professional inspection can identify the root cause, as improper remediation in multi-unit buildings like JVC apartments can sometimes spread spores to other areas. For renters, documenting the issue and informing the landlord is often required for major remediation work.
