How to safely remove mold from wall without damaging paint?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It’s been really humid lately and I think it’s been growing there for a while without us seeing it. What’s the best way to get rid of this mold safely without ruining the paint?

First, move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow for air circulation and stop the spread. The high humidity in Dubai, especially during summer and with AC condensation, creates ideal conditions for this type of hidden mold growth.
For a small area (less than one square meter), you can attempt cleaning with a mixture of 80% water and 20% white vinegar. Do not use bleach, as it can damage the paint and only removes surface discoloration without addressing the root cause. Apply the solution with a spray bottle, let it sit for 10 minutes, then gently wipe with a microfiber cloth. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during the process to avoid inhaling spores. Given the mold has been growing unseen for a while, there is a high chance it has penetrated the wallboard or plaster underneath the paint. Surface cleaning may only be temporary. The most effective method to prevent recurrence is to identify and eliminate the moisture source, which is often condensation from AC units or a minor, unseen leak. For a persistent or large-scale problem, professional assessment is recommended. Remediation specialists can use moisture meters to find the source and may need to remove a section of affected drywall to treat the cavity behind it, which is often necessary for a permanent solution. They can also apply antimicrobial coatings that help prevent regrowth without damaging your paint finish. |
