Is damp wall mold dangerous and DIY fixable in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom of our Jumeirah villa feels damp and has these black speckles spreading out. It’s been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. I’m worried about my family breathing this in, but I’m not sure if this is something I can tackle with bleach and a scrub brush or if I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai.

Damp wall mold in a Dubai villa is a health concern and typically not a DIY fix. The black speckles spreading behind your wardrobe indicate active growth, likely fueled by the high humidity and a hidden moisture source, such as a condensation line from your AC unit or a minor plumbing leak in the wall.
Breathing mold spores can cause irritation, worsen allergies, and trigger asthma symptoms, especially in children or those with respiratory conditions. The risk is determined by the species, which requires lab analysis to identify. Do not use bleach. It is mostly water, which feeds the mold roots deep in the plaster, and its fumes are hazardous indoors. Scrubbing can aerosolize spores, spreading them throughout your home. For a concealed area that's actively spreading, professional assessment is strongly advised. Dubai's climate means the underlying moisture problem will recur unless properly identified and resolved. A certified inspector will use a borescope to see inside the wall cavity, identify the water source, and take air and surface samples for lab culture to determine the species and concentration. Remediation involves isolating the area, removing contaminated materials like damp drywall, and using HEPA filtration to capture spores. Simply cleaning the surface is insufficient. The priority is fixing the moisture issue—whether it's improving ventilation, insulating cold water pipes, or repairing a leak—to prevent it from happening again. |
